Hey all. This may sound crazy, ive got a hit on a 929 for a good price, I race with a cbr 954 motor. Its hard to find 954 motors and If I do they are usually 1500+
I can get a 929 for a lot less. I was thinking of changing the cylinders and pistons out for the 954 block and pistons. I figured you folks would know how big or PITA this job may be..is it practical

not worth it at all
you have to bore and then replate -$650
new piston rings - $150
stretch bolts - $80
bearings - $150
954 head gasket - $80
954 pistons - depending if you buy new ones ($600) or if you buy used ones and they are perfect ($150-$200) (and i mean PERFECT)
954 TBs ($100)
power commander ($300)
figure on spending another $50-$100 converting the wire harness around and miscellaneous other things you encounter (plugs, sensors, soldering in wire for different things needed, etc)
and that's just to get you to the stock 954 power numbers - not worth it, and that's doing every single thing yourself - no shop costs there
or you could just buy a 954 motor and bolt it into a 929, then sell your 929 motor.

it'd be a waste not to go 2mm over... imo, i mean, it'd cost the same, why throw away potential right? if you're boring at all, you need to re-plate. go as big as you can go for the money.
if you were to do some heavy mods, 2mm over, hi compression pistons, lighten the crank, cams, polishing the ports, etc. - then all of a sudden it starts to make more sense.
doing it to JUST get to the 954 platform is a pointless, but after that, if you're serious about modifying a motor - you start to see the gains of spending that money. take a look at those costs i pointed out above. it's the same price to go 2mm over as 1mm over, and if you're buying new pistons (which if you bore and plate your cyl walls, putting used pistons - no matter how nice they are, is a bit like wearing dirty underwear after a shower if you ask me), hi compression ones cost the same standard compression. the forged pistons weight less and are stronger than stock
all i'm saying is - if you're into building because you like building, and you want to go crazy, do it. if you really just want a 954 motor, keep your 929's motor buttoned up, buy a 954 motor, then sell your 929 motor - which would offset your costs mostly.
