The nut is on the right hand side. Don't forget to loosen the pinch bolt before attempting to loosen that nut.

First before what? Loosening the pinch bolts? You need to at least loosen the nut side so it will turn.
Why are you putting a 54 arm on it? I've never tried, but I read somewhere that its a little different. PM conrice, unless he chimes in. He may know for sure.

Let me know if you need any help or pics on it....

it should go in no problems, but i've never done it before.

the reason i used to have concern was because i had to shave a considerable amount of material off the vfr on to fit my 954 motor, and another guy got his viffer arm to fit his 929 motor with a 5lb sledge hammer - which would lead me to believe they're slightly different. but i looked around and a lot of people have done the swap - and they all said it's a straight swap.

you need 954 triangles and 954 rear brake carrier as well

besides the 954 has spools and stock placement for tire hugger it looks alot sharper and i found a red swingarm on ebay for $50 even though i had an extra 954 swingarm, it would cost more then $50 to paint it so i jus ****** the one off ebay.

It's just a sprocket. I turn wrenches too, but I managed to spray mine black. Just cleaned it up and used engine paint.
