Question Undertail/Tray Ugly Piece

Can anyone tell me what the purpose of this piece is?? I have always wondered and want to cut it off, i believe it is to keep grime and dirt off of the shock(maybe) or to keep water/grime from getting near battery location(maybe) but I was just wondering if anyone knows for sure.(red arrows pointing to piece). It does not stick up inside of the undertail, and is molded into the undertail/tray.

I know it is hard to see but if you ride a 929 you know what the piece is (don't know if other CBR models have it). Thanks, -Trey

You were correct is to keep dirt off the shock. You dont like it?? huh.. I think its important. Otherwise your shock would be a lot dirtier.

Its not as good as a hugger, so with the 954 they improved that by giving it one.

Thanks CT.. I just ordered a CF rear hugger, so I am going to cut it off. I understand the importance of it but to me it is out of place, everytime I look at my bike it see it sticking out like Coco's Butt!!!
