Undertail mounting problems

Undertail mounting problems
Since I have to get some new bodypanels anyway I had decided to install an undertail from Hotbodies on my 929.
The locking mechanism, if installed as per the location given by the manufacturer cannot adequately turn the latch toallow the pillion to open. It mates up with the latch mechanism fine but will not provide sufficient torque to move it across full travel. The tail portion under the rear brakelight had to be severely modified (dremel'd) to fit with the rear body/brake light assembly. I ended up taking off the entire fender from the bike to try to match it up as best as I could onto the rear bodywork. I AM NOT HAPPY WITH THE RESULTS. LOOKS LIKE S....! The front contours of the undertail do not aproximate the fenderconsequently I am sorely tempted to epoxy them together. According to the manufacturer is should only take a few hours to install. This is BS. I am probably 8hrs into this project to make it look right and I still haven't figured out a way to make the lock work properly. (Before anyone mentions it, yes I did confirmthat I had ordered the correct part no.)
I am mechanically inclined and probably ownseveral hundred$$$ of mechanics tools (and the experience of using them)but this installation has me particularly frustrated.[:@]Once I decide on new panels for the bike I will very likely order a new OEM fender and a new undertail and try again.Photos of this botched job will be uploaded shortly.
Comments would appreciated at this point to save the little portion of my sanity that I have left.

RE: Undertail mounting problems
I'm guessing you got a bad part. I went Texas Fairing and the install was simple. The lock install should only take a minute. I'm not that mechanically inclined, but I got mine on pretty easy. Pretty much plug n' play. Sorry I couldn't help, but with all your problems, I'd ask for a replacement.

RE: Undertail mounting problems
I had trouble with my undertail also. I couldn't get the clips to stay towards the front of the bike, so I had to use really tiny zip-ties (they are GREAT! LOL) Also, I had some trouble with my lock, and I still have to wiggle it to get the trunk open. Sorry to hear everything is working out so bad for you.

RE: Undertail mounting problems
I bent a part of my lock andhad to drill a slot to get the lock to fit into the undertail.. I had to cut 1/2inch or so off the front of the undertail to get it to fit right and it still did not fit the best but looks good.. Sounds like you did not cut off the original rear fender properly.. Took me about 3-4 hours and I did not have an easy time with it. All in all I think the manufacterer should specify better instructions with better pictures...

RE: Undertail mounting problems
I don't know. I have done many a mechanical thing to my vehicles over the years. Never had a headache to the extent that this has given me.
Really wish I had done more research for other vendors before buying the Hotbodies. It seems tho that Hotbodies is/was the undertail kit of choice on most of the forums I checked out. Ergo, they must be reasonably good in their install and looks. In looking around the interweb afterwards Ifound a kit from Mototeck and will buy it to replace my fubar Hotbodies.

Probably the biggest reason that I will buy this unit is because as a vendor they have generated as much useful information as possible for the enduser. Very well documented as aftermarket parts go.

RE: Undertail mounting problems
i finally put my undertail in lastnight...it took about to hours and it was not the funnest time. The fit was a little off around the rear fairing where the tail light would be and had a pretty good gap so i just put some small black rubber hosing to fill the gap it gave my alot more support altough im not fully satisfied with the hosing look its not to bad i will post a pic when i take some. I also kinda had a problem about the holes lining up for the plastic screws you snap in and it took probably the most time to trying to get those in so finally after getting mad i had to get some help from my dad and we finally got it...im glad he helped and it was also his idea for the hosing so with out him i would of got all frustrated and ended up breaking some thing lol
