Lot of variables, how many and what kind of mods, do you ride in the cold alot, etc. When performance starts lacking or your fuel milage starts to suffer, it may be timefor a change.

I do it around 10,000 miles every time. They recomend every 8,000 but its easier to remember in increments of 10.

NY you should try putting in new plugs you might notice a difference. You get used to a bikes performance and think nothings wrong but it slowly becomes normal when it could have a little more pep that you forgot about.

i think thats my problem this is my first and only bike so running at peak power or not its still faster than i can handle(for now)i just hit 20,000 myself ,,,,is it a hard job for a typical shadetree mechanic?

About 2 hrs. I go from the top, remove the tank and filter box. Not bad considering what a stealership will get ya for $$$$ plus I can clean up everything and look for leaks, cracked lines and such.

I never tried the "manual" way just don't want to take off the radiator and everything else associated...

i change mine from the top, if you do the samewill have to work around a support brace that you will find perfectly placed in the way.

i change mine from the top, if you use the spark plug remover that came in your tool kit it bends around the support brace and its not to bad... make sure you dont over tighten them when you put them back!

Its just like a lot of other things, if you have the right tools its pretty simple, if you dont you could fight a lil bit.
