Default Ignition Question

Hey guys, I was the guy who asked the question about the Speedometer not working earlier.... after taking the whole front end apart, I realized that I do in fact have a short somewhere. I narrowed it down to the wires that run into the bottem of the ignition. If i put the key in my bike, and leave it sit with the lights on then wiggle the wires, the lights will flicker and if i get it just right, the bike will totally turn off until I move them again. I assume that I will need a new ignition, with the harness... or does it come off the bottem of the ignition? I didnt have an allen wrench that would fit the bottem of the bolts that held the ignition in place, so I will have to wait until tomorrow to figure the problem out. anyone else have this problem or have any suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated... thanks!

Default RE: Ignition Question

The harness going to the ignition is actually soldered in and part of the ignition. Mine takes a 7mm allen to get the ignition out but my buddies also with an '01 has different sized allen's on his so not sure.

I would try to get it off and peel the wrap off of the wires and see if there are any wires rubbing together bare, also make sure the connector is nice and tight and isn't corroded and the solder connections aren't loose on the bottom of the ignition. I didn't have the safety torx to get the cover off the bottom and ended up cutting the cover open with sidecutters.

If any of the wires are pulling loose from the ignition it's really easy to reheat the solder and put the wire back in place.
