Default Ground problem

Hi all
I am working through a starting issue(00 929).At first it would intermitantly die on me but would start again no problem. Then the other day it stoped again and i could not start it.After searching on here i first thought it was a HISS problem(the fuel pump would not prime).then while i had the tank off checking connections i grounded the tank on the frame and it primed. So i rigged up a dodgey tank ground and got it home.
Is the tank meant to be grounded? It doesn't look like it to me.If not then it must be the fuel pump ground?????Not sure.
I have downloaded a wiring diagram and i can't see a earth connection on tank.(is this so there can be no sparks while refueling?)

cheers mark

There isn't a ground connection in the wiring diagram for the tank because it isn't an electrical item of any importance. If you notice in the diagram the fuel level sender and fuel pump share a ground into the main harness. I would guess that wire is broken and touching the tank to the frame grounded the pump body through the tank giving it a complete circuit. I would test each side of the pump connector with an ohm meter and try to find where it's broken. Also, since your fan switch is grounded through the pump/level wire, you can test that for continuity without having to remove the tank. If it tests bad, touch a wire from that connector to ground, if the pump primes then something is bad between the main ground and the connector for the pump.
