I have a 2000 929 25,000 miles. I changed the oil drove it home parked it. I drove down the street and it started idling high when I press the clutch to change gears. I stopped at my brothers house let it run idle in the drive way. It seemed fine at that moment. I went in the house to grab something and came out it had steam coming out of the radiator and the temp gauge was at 270. I ran to shut it off. I checked after letting it cool off and the fans rant coming on. I'm sure I can solve that problem. I drove a couple hundred feet to make sure I didn't blow the head gasket. I topped off the water and noticed no horsepower loss and no water in the oil.

I drove it home today from his house.(1.3 miles down the road) It's wants to idle crazy high when it's not in gear. I had to keep it in gear to control the engine speed.. I just changed the oil could that be the root of the problem? Is their still a chance I blew the head gasket. It did that idle thing right before it overheated? Also I just got the bike and have only road it 500 miles. It ran perfect till I changed the oil. Sorry for the long story. Any ideas of where to start. Thanks for reading.

That's where I'd start.
And fix your fan switch !!!!!

 

Get to the root of the fan problem. Make sure it spins freely and comes on when you ground the switch wire.
Make sure your coolant is full. If its not, the wax unit will not pull the idle down. If it keeps getting low, find out where your loss is and if there is flow or not.

 

I topped off the coolant. And I still working on the fan. The fan isn't set to come on till 218 degrees. One I hit that temp it sky rockets so I think I need to figure this out first. But what it's doing is it runs between 1,000 rpm and 2,000 rpm when it's cold started. It was 30 degrees here. It was doing fine till the engine temp got to 100-110 degrees than instantly shot up to 5,000 Rpms. And stayed there. I just stood Next to it watching ready to shut if off. Is that a clue that helps.

 

If you give it just a hair of throttle, does the engine speed go down?

 

I give it it a little throttle and it goes back to 5,000 Rpms.

 

What I'm asking is if you hold the throttle just a hair off the stop, do the rpms come down at all?

Oh I ok. I just checked it again. It builds from 5,000 then when I let off the throttle it goes back to 5,000. When I put it in gear the engine load pulls it down. But as soon as I put it in neutral it goes back to 5,000

 

I would chase the throttle cable and see if it's pinched somewhere. I know honda cars are well known for this. Not a car, but same rpm rise happens when that cable is moved.

 

Are you doing all this with the bike on its sidestand, bars turned. Check nothing changes if you move the bars.
