cleaning the chain
I use some "White Lightning" chain cleaning spray and a little elbow grease, but my bike sits out in the elements with a cover on. I did use a "honda" type chain cleaner, worked like a charm but it was $10 a can and it removed any dirt/grime on the chain/sprocket/swingarm. Basically anything anywhere(didn't try paint
).
No experience with WD-40 but my neighbor uses it on his chain and has never had a complaint.

you can use wd-40 to clean and lube it. it will not hurt the o rings. its does a good job. i use it weekly and take towel and clean off excess. every few weeks i use the chain wax from honda. it stays longer and is less messy
check out this thread, lots of good info in there.
