Default basic teardown/rebuild

ok so ive decided to do a full teardown and rebuild of my 929. my goal is to repaint my plastics, frame and swingarm. i also wanna clean the engine and put a new oil pan and valve cover gasket. while its apart ill be replacing the chain and doing the full tune up and welding the exhaust so my question is.. is there anything else i should look into doing while its in pieces?

Since youre going to be in there, Id check the valves themselves. Unless you know how long its been since they were/if ever. You are going to that much effot, you may as well check them. In addition to that, anything you have to move to get to other areas etc. you may go ahead and check those systems too. Doing a full teardown like this there isnt going to be much left that you shouldnt at least put a wrench on. That doesnt mean you have to start throwing money at it though, follow the procedures for testing components via the manual. The ones that cannot be tested think about another manual procedure you can use. IE hoses, etc. How old is the bike? If you do not know or have service histories, check it all my friend, check it all.

When you have the oil pan off, give a good look up inside as well at the cogs, etc. Notice case walls and what not. Check for hairlines around connective points. Notice oil health. Metal in oil, etc.

be sure and replace the cam timing chain, and the plastic guides. Clean and inspect tensioner.
These are couple of items you wont want to have to tear down again to replace.
