ive got a 01 929 w/ about 15k miles on it.never really noticed it last season but this season im hearing a tapping sound from the motor. it only happens when im decellerating, kinda faint from wind and road noise. but when im slowing down, just downshifting into first i burp the throttle just a bit and when the revs fall i can hear the tapping. like i said its more pronounced when i do this b/c less wind and road noise (it does it any time the revs are falling from around3-4k rpms). doesnt matter if the clutch is in or out.
thanks

its not a ping. my dads 400ex pings when it doesnt get premium at the sand dunes. i know that sound. ive been running regular since i bought it. put 2 tanks of premium in a row once and notice no difference in sound or preformance.
these last few days have been warm and its definatly noticable when the bike is warmed up. i wouldnt say its a cam chain noise b/c its too low pitch for that.
im running Havoline 10/40 regular oil in it and was thinkin of swithcing to semi or full synthetic.
hoping its not a valve out of adjustment. looks like a weekend project by my 954 manual. will have to get teh specs for a 929 if i do tackle it.

i was told you are supposed to have a bunch of stuff done at 16k. all stuff to do with the valves and whatnots. sorry about my verbiage but i never got it done and have had no wierd noises with 21k on mine. i would suggest calling the honda dealer and asking what all is involved with that, could prove to be beneficial.

check the spark plugs. one may be backing out. do a search on there for stripped spark plug and you'll see a few different posts (like mine) where people have had their spark plug (usually #3) actually back out because it's stripped. the first thing I noticed was a tapping sound like a valve that was out of whack. kind of a pain to get to under the tank/airbox but check it early to avoid all the pain in the *** I had to go through
