Default Air box flapper

Hello all -
I haven't posted in 2 years. I took the plastic off my 2001 929 to paint it, and my wife jumped at the opportunity - she started finding other stuff for me to do to keep it out of commission! The bike sat in the garage for 2 freaking years !!
Well it's done now and back on the road - I'll post some pix when I can. Came out great.

My question is this - I've read the numerous HTEV posts, and maybe I missed it, but plain and simple: what happens if I remove the flapper? By that I mean take out just the flapper, leave the pulleys and cables as they are, leave the HTEV installed (mine moves freely, works fine)
During tests, the flapper seems sluggish and doesn't always pop up all the way, as if the return springs need to be stronger.
What happens if I just pull it out? Anybody done this?

Sorry - I'm sure this question has been answered - I just couldn't find it.

Thanks all
Six

well i'm still a novice to all this but when i checked my air box after about a year of owning the bike, I found out my whole flapper assembly was gone. I believe thats why i have a jerking problem from about 3000 to 3500 rpms. If that doesn't help, sorry, lol. Just wanted to post something on this

Removing the flapper is easy to do and will allow your engine to get the MAX amount of air instead of being restricted by the flapper. I believe 4 screw hold it in, remove them and unhook the cable, it will still move and function, however you will get a free-er flowing airbox which SHOULD give you some extra hp.

scardem23, The jerkiness you are feeling in your bike is the hetv valve, the 929 and the 954 are notorious for being jerky the the lower rpm range especially when the hetv rotates from 1/4 to half open at 3000rpms. To help that go away you COULD do the hetv mod and get a custom map. You will lose some bottom end but should make up for it in the higher rpm range. However the lower to higher rpm gain will be smoother.

htev mod? Guess I'll have to do some reading on that. As far as a custom map goes, I don't have a PC, so should I get one or do I have another option?

I just had my bike put on the dyno with a pc and I am still having problems. The major problem seems that if the bike stays in a higher gear with low rpm's the bike seems to load up and get real hitchy. You can also hear a definate difference in the exhaust when this happens. Not sure if this is the exhuast valve, the flapper valve or something else....any thoughts

Check out this site directly from Honda. This confirms the reasoning for the flapper and HTEV are environmental to help in noise reduction.

If you remove the flapper from the airbox that means you are removing the cables as well and when you do MAKE SURE you plug up those holes in the air box. I use a nut and bolt that barely squeeze through and some Honda bond.

You can leave the cables hooked to the servo. You don't have to remove them unless you want too. The cable to the flapper on my bike just sticks up into the airbox and will move with the servo but it is not hooked to anything. This way if I ever want to put it back the cable is right there. You can do the same if you remove the HTEV which I still have and use on my bike.
