Just curious why you had to buy a new one? I had some speedo trouble and I thought I was going to buy a new one and come to find out it was something simple. But to answer your question I have heard that you have to get them programed for the milage you have. Just remember that this not bonafid information so just don't take my word alone this just what I have heard from other people that work on bikes.

you can send your new and old display to this company with thier waiver signed, and of course the required funds and they will adjust the mileage for you. http://www.bluegauges.com/prod_used_gauges.htm

Mine was reading whatever speed it wanted to at random even when I was at a contant speed with others I was riding with. I thought the sensor went out so I spent the money one. When I got the tank off I found the harness that it plugs into and found the connection loose. So I plugged it back in and heard the click. Then I put my tank back on and rode it and it works just fine and have not had a problem since. It didn't pay that much for the sensor even though I didn't need it. I think I paid $70 for it. The intersment cluster is expensive though if you can't get it second hand. Hope this helps.
