two for one on the questions
What year? Basically the question you need to ask youself is, "How much do I want to spend?", because speed isnt cheap. Also, what do you want to do with the bike? In all honesty, if you want it to be really fast and unless you have a major affliction with the 900, buy something faster. It will cost you more to make yours competative with a new litre bike than to just buy a new one. Otherwise, 945cc Kit, NOS, Turbo, re gear it, full exhaust, K&N filter, +4 timing advance, cams, the list is endless. Again, it'll cost you a ton of money to run with say, even a 1st gen Gix1K. Then you have to look at what you wanna do with it. Drag race? Road race? Street only? Hard to road race a NOS bike for obvious reasons, probably run into difficulties with a Turbo bike on the track in the same way. Lagggggg.............Laaaaggggg.......WHAM, all power while too far over equals trouble. More info on your intentions will lead to better results from us.
I think so. Drop one in front and go up 2 in rear, add a filter if you choose, but it should be jetted to really benefit from it. Other wise you probably wont notice the filter much, maybe not either way. A full exhaust will help alot.
Try one of these. I have the RK 520 "Quick Acceleration" kit on mine and i like it. Not too insane on the gearing, yet noticable for sure.

Negative on the turbo lag. A properly sized turbo on a decent exhaust system won't lag. Especially if you splurge and get a ball bearing turbo. Considering bikes have powerbands that are peaky as hell and don't make much power in any part of the powerband except for top-end, you won't be spending much time worrying about mid-range power anyways. Keep the bike in the upper reaches of the powerband, and you won't experience any sort of lag whatsoever.
The best mod I've done is the 520 kit with 1 tooth down in front and up 2 in back.
Cheapest mod was a slip-on (which is a huge difference on the 900) off of ebay. The 900 has a craptastic muffler that weighs a ton and doesn't flow well at all. Any slip-on is a wonderful improvement. Full system is even better.
Foam filter (Uni) was great too.
Carb jet kits are available on ebay pretty cheap too. A little elbow grease and a lot of test rides, and you can get dial the carbs in without having to drop a lot of money at a shop.
If you just want power so you can put buslengths on your friends while riding around, get a nitrous kit. If you've got a whole hell of a lot of money to spend and you want the most badass 900RR you can possibly build, go turbo. I think mine will be ready for some tune & dyno time by the end of next week.

D&D full exhaust with cf pipe off ebay=$350 shipped
1 down in the front 2 up in the rear WITHOUT switiching to a 520 kit off ebay=$35 shipped
Jet kit off ebay(tuned it myself)= $45
I stuck all of these on my bike and i noticed a BIG power difference without having to spend a fortune.

You can try to check the Honda service manual on the RRzone (http://www.rrzone.com/downloads/downloads.shtml) for the wire colors, or possibly the microfiche of parts at www.ronayers.com will have them listed.
But what I did was just mix and match until I got the flushmounts working properly. The front indicators are three wires for each so that you can have a running light and a turn signal light. So get a flushmount or whatever with THREE WIRES & designed to have a running light, and you're good to go. Then it's just a process of elimination.
As for the back, it's just two wires I think. It's just an on/off light. With a two-wire electrical system, it doesn't matter if you get them backwards- the bulb will still light up properly.

how hard is it to put in and tune a jetkit for a 900.
I have never worked on carbs before in my life but I do understand the basic make up of a fuel injected engine and how it works.
Are their any tutorials on how to jet a card on a bike?
