Ok, I purchased my 96 900RR a month or so ago without the user manual. There are no markings on the petcock and considering that even on bikes from the same manufacturer are different, I'm hoping someone can fill me in on what is what. If your stooping on the ground next to the bike and facing the petcock, there are three positions. Starting with it turned fully couterclockwise, please tell me what position is that, one click clockwise and two clicks clockwise. I've had the tank off when I was checking things out and I'm pretty sure that fully counter clockwise is off. I normally keep it fully clockwise, but have suspicions that that setting may be reserve and not "ON"

 

I have a 99 and on mine, (facing as you stated) the 9 o'clock position is "off" the 6 o'clock is "on" and the 12 o'clock is reserve.
