Well you need to do whatever makes you feel confident. I own a machine shop and have probably 100 grand in tools at my home alone. My bikes , cars , whatever are meticulously maintained and routinely serviced. Not that that means you won't have a break down on the road cause that surely happens but it does make breaking down parts of the bike much easier. While the stock tool kit is of lesser quality to the say the least , it does contain an adequate selection for most tasks. There are just a couple if additions I typically add to it but they also fit in the standard kit pouch. What's that saying about blaming the tools ?

true enough, a decent or clever mechanic can make do. i have gotten by with the bare essentials quite well, but have been in situations where the lack of the right tool can ruin everybody's ride if they have to turn around and wait while one rider tries to figure out how to get his bike back up and running. to that extent, having a good selection of basic tools can be helpful for others in need.
there are always, of course, going to be problems that no selection of tools on the road will fix.
