Default sc33. 96t with a 98 lump

Hello.
As the title suggests.
My recently acquired sc33 has a late engine in a 96 bike.
It has all the 96 ancillaries. It was in a hedge for five years. I've just got it legal and running well. (Don't mention carbs.
It has several duplicate parts because of the year mismatch. Speedo sensor etc.
My newest thing to fix however relates to the cooling system.
It has the housing for the 98 thermostat. And it's got the necessary extended pipe to fit to the 96 pipework.
Problem is it seems to have no thermostat. There's certainly not one in the 98 housing. I looked when it was leaking from a clip.
And the radiator starts getting warm immediately it is started. I can't verify yet if there's a 96t thermostat one in teh head mounting. Because I haven't had a look yet.
If there is it must I guess be stuck open.
So questions.
Does anyone know if the 96thermostat will fit in the hole on a 98engine head?
So i can avoid stripping parts looking for something that isnt there
And- if I put the newly acquired much better condition housing and thermostat,in the place of the knackered and empty 98thermostat housing, will it work properly regarding water flow route?
Temp I haven't checked with a laser yet though I will today. Guage is analog and does move .just stays just above the cold. But in operating range when ridden. If left sitting running for a long time, temp will rise to middle of guage and fan comes on.but after like 20mins no air flow.
What do peopel here know ?
Thanks for reading my rambling message Have a great day

Sinead

@Minerva Hi and welcome to the forum. The Thermostat for the 96 is the same one that is used in many models of Honda's including CBR600, F2, F3, VFR's and the like. The 98 is different. If Honda could have used the same one I think they would have. I'd get the right one and use it. Operationally I'm sure it will function just fine with respect to water flow.

Thank you for the speedy reply. 😸.
I have a 98 thermostat and housing arriving today or tomorrow.i'll fit that and see .I'll check behaviour with a laser thermometer.
The engine is a 98. As I said . And the pipework is modified to fit the housing for the 98. Probably because they just put the whole engine in.
Does that make sense?
I dont know if the head has space for a 96 thermostat. And it's acting like it doesn't have one at all.

For illustrative purposes.(not illustrative porpoises. As there are no dolphin pictures)
