How old is your battery?

You can do a test on the battery and the charging system by buying a volt-meter from the electric/hardware store.

You leave the bike OFF, and then test to see if the battery is charged or dead.

Then you turn the bike ON, and test to see if the charging system is working properly or under or overcharging your battery, or not charging at all.

I've heard that usually it's the rectifier that goes bad FIRST, and it will then damage the stator.

TEST THE BATTERY FIRST! regardless of if its new or not, it may have cracked and leaked. Start the bike first and measure the voltage, it should be 13.5-14 volts. Typically Rectifier/Regulators WILL go bad before the stator. A mechanic friend of mine showed me how to test the R/R using a multimeter on the Ohms setting to see if it was bad or not but i forgot the steps.

check yer harness going to the stator, burned a bit at the plug? when this happened to me, i replaced the rectifier and the stator. you dont have to drop the bike for the stator to quit, my stator had a bunch of the coating that protects it , chiped off, the harness was baked. replaced with the new stuff , bike fired up run/charged perfectly...dont sweat it , these old RR's are famous for these problems...peece

chaser28, you might still wanna get that volt-meter I was talking about earlier.

I got a cheap one from radio shack and it has indicator lights that tell me if the bike is charging the battery and by how much...it also shows if the bike is overcharging the battery.

well after that small issue a voltage meter wouldnt be a bad investment, it would cut down on any eletrical problems i may have in the future

Default My 93 Blade

Was having trouble keeping my battery staying charged, batt tested good and so did the stator. Checked the regulator/rectifier and couldn't get the plug out. Browsed eBay and found a plug and regulator/rectifier for $20 so I figured why not try it. After getting the old one off and some cutting I found out the old one was shorted and melted the plastic around the three yellow plugins (why I couldnt unplug it). Most of the time it was charging the battery but I was left on the side of the road a couple times, All is well now that I have changed it out with a new one. So for the sake of $20 it is no big deal to rule out the problem. Worked for me.
