Try this: Start the bike up and see if you can smell coolant coming out of the muffler. If so, it could be a sign that your head gasket failed or you have a warped head. Also, check your engine oil level to see if the coolant is getting in there.

Not sure if these are common failure on the '98 900RR or not. Good luck.

just a thot, did you fill the resrvior to the top? after it pukes is the level in the res. in tween the lines? the reason you olny fill the res half-ful is for expansion and contraction. keep it simple before tearing it apart. but if you overheated the bike real bad before thermostat replacement, then hollywood is correct , you could of blown the head gasket , definatly check yer oil for milky signs...peeece

i agree with checking the res. i dont think mine had anti freeze in it so i added pure anti freeze and rode it then let it overflow out what it didnt need. not the best solution but didnt feel like draining it. plus the coldest it gets here is just at 32F and its in a shed with a heat light on it anyway.

so i changed the oil its fine and there is no smell from the exhaust. i was reading up on it and called the local shop and they said it could be that the cap to the radiator could be messed up and not working correctly could this also be a reason?

Maybe there is air trapped in the cooling system, Check your manual for air bleed locations

Yes , the cap could play a role, replace it if you suspect it. the over flow is usually rite under the the cap, to let overflow out. if there is a problem withe the cap it could let hot coolant past the cap-seal and out the tube...
