Hi I am new here and new bike owner etc etc...
i have a 1998 cbr900rr and need to do my first oil change. I went to a local motor sports store and they gave me " honda genuine 4-stroke sae 10W-40 SJ Motorcycle oil" (quoted from the bottle) I got home and opened up my clymer Manual to see that it says " Do Not use sh or sj rated automobile oils in motorcycle engines they can contain friction modifiers etc etc etc." so my question is, is it ok to use SJ motorcyle engine oil i got or should i go back and get sf or sg rated?

 

Any Honda Brand made oil is going to work just fine in your 900. The issues come in because of motorcycles having a "wet clutch".. This means that the oil that is used to lubricate and cool the engine is the same oil that is used to lubricate the clutch. The problems arise when people put in motor oils with "special addives" that are made to clean, extend engine life, etc etc... These oils can sometimes harm the clutch plates in your assembly rendering them slippery and useless (a.k.a. you pull in the clutch lever and nothing happens) so long story short, Honda oil is made for Honda engines. So it is always a safe bet. I would suggest going with Amsoil Synthetic. It is more expensive but I think it is worth it because of highly quality oil and better running temps... (And it is "wet clutch safe") hope this helps man!!! HAve fun with your new 900!!
