Default Oil Help

Okay, so I just bought a '96 900rr and before I go pulling plastic, can anyone tell me how I can check the oil without just draining and measuring? Btw, now I know why people still track down and buy these things. What a blast!

Smile oil

CBR900RAR,check the oil for what, my friend. if its quality then use the dipstick and smell it and check the colour, i insist on changing oil if it any colour other than new, but generally speaking it should drip off your dipstick consistantly or should not be thick and black, if it doesn't it will need changing.regards tach. if im misinterperating the message then i apologise. (the glass on the engine (near gear selector) should give you an idea to the quality/condition of the oil.)

Well, after a little research, I believe I may have an engine from a 1995 900rr. There is no sight glass anywhere to be found.(I checked...... Extensively.) And there is no dipstick. I'm pretty sure the guy that had it before me lost the dipstick or broke it and just replaced it with a filler plug. I have drained the oil and measured it(checks out okay) and used a dowel rod to measure where the correct level is inside the casing. If you can see the picture in my signature, let me know if I am on the right track. Did they put these types of covers on the '96s or do I have a replacement motor? Any help would be appreciated.

I think he wants to make sure the quantity is write (hence the emasuring). If so, you should be changing the oil RIGHT NOW anyway, since you just bought it. then you'll know exact how much YOU put in (about 4 qt.)

'95 had these two funky purple, white, and black schemes. 1996 was all red. But yeah, someone put an old motor in his bike. If I could see the swingarm up close, I'd have a better idea of the frame's year ...

The frame's vin checks out as a '96. I think someone just swapped in an older motor.

Get the correct oil cap with a dipstick, that is the only sure way to properly check the bike in my opinion.

Take a good photo of the engine and the area where the dipstick goes in and bring it to a Honda dealer. They should have the right one for you.
