now what????
ok. well i started working on getting my project bike running, but no luck yet. when i try to start it the starter fires but the engine won't turn over. i was told that the starter could need replacement. when i got this wrecked bike the seller neglected to tell me that the oil pan was cracked. so the bike was without oil for quite a while. first thing i thought it was junk, i dropped the oil pan (which i have replaced)and looked up inside it was clean as a whistle w/no metal shavings or damage that i could see. today i cranked over the motor manually, it turned over w/a ratchet fairly easy and i could hear the compression as i turned it. should i try changeing the starter i have put all new plugs and wires, oil, filter & a new battery. what do you think to get this thing running (besides praying to the 2 wheeled god)? thanks, ron
Hey Ron, I can't remember who I mentioned this to before, but one time I went to replace the stator cover and accidentally knocked the starter motor's gear off of its little spindle that connects to the crank--so when I tried starting it, the starter motor just spun and spun its little heart out. It was amazingly easy to push the gear off--but it went back on just as easily with a little more care and shazaam! Fire!
You'd have to remove the left side engine cover to check it, it's the one that covers the stator, it's bolted on as well as magnetic, plus it has a gasket, so a little patience and maybe (or maybe not) get a new gasket in case the old one rips...but once you get it off you'll be able to instantly see if that's the problem...that's what I would check first, since you've done just about everything else...

to have moved or brokefrom the accident it was in? thanks.
There'll be a little oil, yes, but you don't need to drain it first, the pan is lower than the side cover. Just keep a rag handy and be gentle but firm with the cover to get it off. Even with the bolts out, it will stay on due to the gasket and/or magnetism. If you need to crack open the cover to get it off, use a piece of wood to break the seal (keep an eye on splinters, though) instead of a screwdriver--the aluminum cover will gouge like crazy.
Without opening up my own, I can't remember how much room is around the starter gear--so I don't know if it could come off during flight. You'll see it right away though, it's exactly in line with the starter motor. Man I hope that's all it is...

thanks! i will definatly try that asap. my guess is that if this is not it it might the kill switch. when the bike went down i assume that
it went down on the right side due to the right clip-on beeing slightly dented and the grip was ripped. i'm not sure if the crash would mess up the switch. thanks again you've been a big help, ron

well even though it looks fine i think it will be my next step. is it easy to change? because i can take it off my other bike to try
and see if it works.
and see if it works.
no 1 will believe me but the problem was it had to be in neutral w/the clutch pulled in & the kickstand up it also needed a new petcock. the dam thing runns great and shifts smoother than my other bike. thanks for all the help spiritrr and mattthecat.
