Default noobie here

hello i just sold my 1992 gs500e and found a 1996 cbr900rr with a vance and hines system for sale in my local newspaper for 1000 bux. so i was wonder are there any common problems i might look for? and pros and cons of this bike? i took it for about a 30 mile ride seems fine.. no sputters, no stalls, just alot of power compared to my gs500. but the onlywrong is that it is naked. plastics were broke which means it was laid down or somthing. feedback would be much apprecated

Best bet leedutcher might be to bring a friend who knows bikes to go with you to look at it again and to rest ride it.

Ask the seller how many people have owned the bike, how many times has it been crashed, was it ever raced on a racetrack or stunted like was it made to do lots of wheelies and stuff?

Does the bike have a lot of other modifications?

Do the fork seals leak oil? Check the oil with the dipstick, is it clean or dirty?

Ask how often was the bike serviced? Does the seller have paperwork to back up his claims?

Make sure the bike rides straight, and that the forks are not twisted.

Check if there is any 900rr or fireblade stickers on her. lol

Welcome abroad bro! good choice and nice buy!

Apart from what MT had described above, if I was you, I would sort of have an agreement with the buyer to bond a warranty period for let say a month. Based on your ride, you said so far everything seems to be ok. Back up with your experience as a biker I'm sure you will notice any general malfunctions as well.

I suggest you perform a complete service for the bike, changing the oil, filters, plugs, tuning and etc. Watch out for the charging system. I will ride hard on her a couple of times to see if there is any problem because most of the time problems will freak out only in this way.

The pro will be her outstanding torque and power; the con will be your ability to handle her!

You didn't say how many miles are on the bike, but for a $1000 asking price for a 900RR that seems to ride straight and run well you can't really go wrong. Even if the bike is naked. Seems unlikely that the seller would want to give you any kind of warranty, especially with that low of an asking price. I say if the miles are not astronomically high, probably worth picking up. To put it in a little context, there are a few riders on here with 40,000+ miles on their 900's.

yeah i would deff say for 1k.... you really cant be to upset.....

even if say worst case the motor blows you should be able to part out the bike and make most if not all and then some of your money back.....

i would go for it.... my only warning is plastics are pricey.... im in that boat right now.....

Even if it ran like drippy monkey poo I'd buy it for $1000, you can get more than that just by parting it out on ebay. If it runs, even better. But like dinez mentioned check the charging system. Even without a multimeter you can check the reg/rec to stator connector for discoloration from too much heat. You can also check that the wires from the reg/rec and stator are nice and flexible and not discolored. That's about the only problem with the 900rr everything else is pretty much bulletproof.

The rest of the checking is pretty standard bike stuff, leaks and loose parts and such. Pay particular attention to the brakes and how they handle when you apply them. Do they pulse, does it pull, do they work!

Looks good, especially for a $900 bike. I think you got a really good deal.
