Default My CBR 900RR Project

Well it's possible from my introduction thread and miscellaneous question threads you may be informed about my new bike. I picked up a 98 CBR 900RR fairly cheap and I'm in the process of putting her together to get back on the road.

Well today I made my first major dent. I removed the rear tail and sorted out of the previous owners frankenstein wiring. I completely on my own and as a newbie to wiring...re did the entire rear harness. Ran new wires, soldering, wrapped, etc.

I'll be updating this as the time goes and hope to have more in the future.

Here's how I purchased the bike:

Here's the crap wiring I had to deal with: (Brake lights weren't working all the time, and left/right blinkers were non existent.

Here's how she is at the moment in my messy garage (Please excuse that mess!)

Mirros, levers and new taillight/wiring done. (Although I'm unsure if this bike has a running rear taillight...I figured there should be for safety, can anyone confirm?)

(My 2012 Jetta GLI is in the back if there's any fans!)

Thanks for looking and I hope you look forward to the future build of my bike

P.S.

I need to get a front fender....holy crap, so many little rocks and water get kicked into my face with out one!

Yep, it should have an operable tail light (on when bike is on).

Take pride in getting your rewiring done. The franken-wiring you found is typical of used bikes.

Def get a front fender. ;-)

Great...now I have to figure out how to get that to work lol

I was extremely proud of myself...and my parents were as well. They couldn't believe I had the patience and knowledge to figure out how to put it all back together.

I think you can use something like the 929 or 954 nose fairing, I think the 900rr nose looks big and gottty. Its coming along nice tho, gl on the wiring you never know what the previous owner has done.

I plan to leave it naked since I'm not planning on investing to much $$$ in this. I'd like to get a season out of it, and sell her and possibly finance a new 600 or 1000 in a year or two.

Well today I found the gauge cluster plug!!! I took apart the front head light assembly, and placed as many rusting bolts and nuts into a container of vinegar for the reassembly and I happened to find the gauge cluster plug wrapped in electrical tape!!!

2 issues...the speedo and tach don't work !!!!

well if you plugged in the cluster and the speedo didn't work, that could be the speed sensor, depends on the year for location, 97 - front sprocket cover, 98-99 - top side of the motor, older years i think were cable speedo on the front tire. Im not sure about the rpm.

I looked in the manual and you're correct about the location of the 98. I'm going to remove the gas tank this week and mess around with more wires!

I'm making alot of progress!!! It's almost ready to get registered!!! Once I have a title in my name i'll be super happy.

The more I think about it though...I may be able to make a pretty penny on this and put a down payment on a new bike once I get some experience.
