Default motor whoes!

I put a 97 900rr (919)motor in my 98 900rr, using 98 harness, carbs and stator.
My temp gauage flashes 270 and wont register anything different!
Cylinders 1 and 2 are dead! Plugs are sparking but not running. Two different coils opperate cyl1 and cyl2, so I know its not my coils, plus the plugs show spark when taken out and arked.
When the bike is at idle it back fires and wont stay running after the back fire, but anything over 1500 rpm the bike will run, rough but run. It feels like its only hitting on two cylds.
I guess the next step to to clean the carbs (which was done in aprox Aug) and get new plugs to see if I might have fowled one or two.
I was also told to check to see if the valves were opperating correctly, my friend seems to think maybee a stuck exhaust valve, but it runs over 1500 rpm with no backfires, So I dont understand how that could be the problem.

Any suggestions?
Could I have the plug wires in the wrong cylinders?

I guess if your plug wires were on the wrong cylinders, it could cause that problem, but I would suspect the carbs are the issue. Perhaps not a consistant supply of fuel to the cyclinders. I have the service manual for a 96-98 and you could verify. If you want it, I can upload it someplace and post you a link so you can get it.

Hey thanks for the post but last night while I was falling asleep, I thought of the wires and they are ran wrong!
Stupid mistake of not marking the wires before I removed them!
Thanks anyway about the manual!

Alright... motor runs and moves out but I need some suggestions.

1). Temp gauge reads 270 flashes and wont change.

2). Bike starts, idles and accelerates, but at any given point the bike breaks up and starts to buck real hard. A few times it shut right down and I had to restart it. The carbs were cleaned out in Aug 06, I am wondering if I am losing vaccum or could my petcock be no good? Or is there a filter inside the tank (gas looks clean and no visible signs of sediment in the tank)?? I have no inline fuel filter before the carbs. Could it be something electrical? I am lost on this one, all my air lines are hooked up and the air box is tight in place and all the rubber grommets are tight (below the carbs and above the carbs).

Please leave me suggestions..... any suggestions!

Are you running a fuel pump (I do, but forget what years were gravity fed and what years used a pump)? If you are running a pump, you might be losing ground on the pump.

Are the carbs jetted to your application or do you have a pretty standard set-up? When you cleaned the carbs, did you look closely at the needle jets? Sometimes the rubber coating warps and causes problems. I had to replace a needle jet myself.

For the temp gauge, does the sensor bolt into the head on the right side? It sounds like it is either bad, or the wrong one.

No I do not run a fuel pump, my is vaccum released from the petcock.

My friend at a local speed shop did the carbs and said they were perfect and did not even need to be done at all. I am runnig stock air filter with two brothers full exhaust and a small bump in jet (not even a stage one jet bump).

I think I will switch my sensor from my 98 to the 97 motor and see if it sends a usable signal.

There is a 1/4 vent line below my tank that t's off in three directions 1) to the tank 2) out the bottom of the bike? 3) ?????? airbox maybee? <~~ If anyone knows please let me know!

Thanks, woody!
