I hate when that happens! Sorry, I don't have a motor, but some info. I just replaced my '94 motor w/a '96 motor. REAL simple, I think the only difference was the sender on the water temp sensor. You didn't post what year you were looking for, but I figured I'd pitch in my 2 cents. If you've got a '93/'94 frame, the '95/'96 motors between those years will "drop in", no mods necc. Going the other way ('95/'96 frame, older motor), you'd probably have to switch wiring harness/speedo/etc.....dunno. Any years higher than that......again I'm no help. I spent a ridiculous amount of time researching what motor would bolt up to my '94 frame, thought I'd save you some time if you're in the same boat!
Good luck!

BTW, I spent $1100.00 on the motor, + a 1200 mile round trip to pick it up (San Fran to San Diego and back was a hell of a lot of driving, but my wife's got family in SD so it worked out alright, anything to get my bike running!!!!!). Got lucky, the motor runs sweet.

Egads, I goofed, it was a '97 motor (bonehead, sorry). Ease of install still pertinent, tho!

You can use a 93 frame with a 98 motor, just need to change out ect sensor and use the 93 harness and carbs, Get them rejetted. The only problems/mods are backwards shifting (up is down/ down is up) and the right upper mount will need shims (washers) to meet the motor. Works well and opens up alot of options.

Sanders, thanks for mentioning the reverse shifting (race pattern) bit, I'd forgotten that myself. Ebay'd a left peg/linkage/shifter, then decided to get used to the race pattern and didn't use the parts. Safe to say you've performed the swap w/the '98?

Yes I have, very easy. Even the 93 exhaust will bolt up. I'd rather have had the 98 exhaust just incase they made flow restriction changes over the years, but you can't have everything. The combo makes for a neat look/performance package. I'm a fan of the 93's flat nose twin circle headlights, and I like the umph the 98 919cc motor has. I haven't had a chance to realy open it up, not sure if I just respect the law too much, or I'm always thinking "what did I leave loose". As far as the backwards shifting goes, I love it. I will never go back. Now if I could just figure out how to reverse the shifting for my 1980 kz1300 I'd be set.

Down side of getting a used motor. After the installation I found 2nd gear pops into neutral under very high loads. So I get to pull it back out and replace the shifter forks this winter and spend some more money.

Ughh. If I recall, tranny requires a case split, no? God, I hope not for your sake....(sorry, you may dig into motors that far all the time, I just recall getting deep into the '94 and wondering what I was getting into). I feel like a bit of an idiot, but shortly after posting, I realized it was a '97, not a '96 that I'd bought/swapped (what a bonehead). Same thing bolt up wise, but sheesh! Anyways, after riding up to Alice's (in the Bay Area, SF) this weekend, and reallllllly paying attention to what my left foot was doing, I found that I'm no longer goofing up on up/downshifts, and am appreciating more not having my foot underneath the shifter in LH sweepers. Think I'm gonna leave it alone. Know anyone in need of a footpeg/shift assembly off a '95? heh. Here's hoping my used motor holds up, got 300+ miles on it since install, runs well/shifts well (murphy, hope your'e not listening.)
Thanks!
Will
