Default Lot's of 900rr questions that need answering

Alright, as I am trying to familiarize myself with this '96 900rr, I have seen some conflicting photos. The casing on the lower right side of my engine is smooth and has no bolt pattern on it.(as you can see in the photo) Most of the '96 900rr photos that I have seen show a three bolt pattern and a smaller cover. I started researching this because my bike has no oil sight glass (ANYWHERE!!) and no dipstick (just a plug cap on the filler). Any comments, answers, etc? I'm trying to figure out if the previous owner did an engine swap somewhere along the line. With all plastic removed, there is a stamp on the block reading 893cm3, so I know it is the correct size motor. Just trying to figure some things out. Not that I am complaining. This thing just dusted a 2005 100rr. I just want to know what I have on my hands.

the clutch cover is not right or the whole engine is not right so look at the back of the engine by the starter there should be a vin there see if it matches yours!!, if not do a search with the nunbers you have on the engine and see what year it is, you can call the local dmv they be able to tell you what year it is.

Here is what the cover looks like on a '94 if that helps you.

Yeah, no, the 893cc engine is '93-'95. From '96 to '99 it changed to 919cc ... and you're right, the clutch cover changed too, when they added an oil sight glass ... the 893 engine came with a dipstick attached to the fill cap. Someone must have changed caps on your engine.

Your swingarm looks pre-'96 too. If there's a big square metal block where the axle comes through, then it's older. The bodywork is definitely newer, but I'm curious what the VIN tag on the frame says the model year is.

As long as everything works though ... should be fine. I'm also curious how your speedometer is hooked up. The 893 has a completely different setup that is not (easily) compatible with 919 instruments.

Your bike might have a different frame or a different engine or both.

My '93 900rr has no sight glass for the oil or any sight glass at all, and there is a dipstick for the oil cap.

Not sure if that helps.

My bike had the speedometer switched so I really don't know the actual mileage.

The engine has also been heavily modified, but no problems so far.

I guess that's one downside of having an incredibly popular and very old sportbike like the 900rr.... many racers love to tinker with it and over the years the bike may have had many different owners who may have done different things to the bike.

No. It wasn't. In 1996, and then again in 1998, you could buy a solid red CBR900RR.
