Default How hot is too hot?

Wanted to see if you guys might have some insight for me here!

I just finished building a 900rr fighter about two weeks ago (here is a semi-recent pic, though much has been done since.)

The history of this bike is that it was basically a roach when I bought it (its a 93 with high miles that i picked up for $1500 and then spent many many hours turning it into something that is approaching nice...)

Anyways, Since I purchased the bike and subsequently got it back on the road I have noticed the fan never ever comes on... After taking it off and testing it I have come to find that it doesn't function even when hard-wired into the battery (a new fan is on its way)...

I finally got a Trailtech Vapor speedo/tach/temp gauge installed last weekend and the next day took a 300 mi. ride... The temp. sensor is located on the right side (cool side) measuring the temp. of the coolant entering the motor (i was lazy and didn't want to drain the radiator to install it on the hot side.)

I had never noticed the bike getting hot previous to this (though I wouldn't have known as I had no gauges, but I never lost any power or heard any boiling anitfreeze.) But on this ride I noted that at freeway cruising speed the temp. of the coolant entering the motor was consistantly 180-190 F... As soon as I got on surface streets the temp would skyrocket to 200+ and once it overheated just a bit to the point where it was steaming a little at 207 F.....

Now I am not sure what to think, but 200+F on the cool side of the cooling system seems ridiculous hot to me... I have a fan that should be here by next week, but its almost sounding to me like I might have thermostat issues as well...

If anyone has insight it would be greatly appreciated!

mine got to 215(used a heat light gun and pointed it to the radiator) and it never steamed or bubbled. For what ever reason my fan doesnt even kick on until it gets to the 3/4 mark on the gauge,it could b the temp sensor but im prolly gonna run a toggle to my fan just to play it safe

I have a new fan coming (via ebay) as mine is 100% dead.. I think I am just going to wire it into a toggle as well.. We'll see what the temp. looks like after I get that going....

900's usually kick on around 218F I've a 97 but with a digital guages also on city speeds and traffic it gets easily to over 200F and easily 220F when at a light then down when the fan kicks in and I gotta say these blades run cooler than the later models tho or R1's for example
