You'll need the wiring harness for the 99 to make it work.

No. You'll need the later carbs because they have the throttle position sensor.

If you're using the 98-99 motor with wiring harness... use the 98-99 timing sprocket. If you have a timing advancer sprocket, I'd consult with the manufacturer first! Factory, Two Brothers, Erion, etc.... If you want to use your original 95 gauges, you'll need to do some electrical wiring becuse the 98-99 reads the speed not off the sprocket, but instead from the crankshaft. You'll also need a speedo-healer to adapt the proper voltage to get the correct speed if connecting to the speedo sensor on the 98-99 . Or place your old 95 sprocket & sprocket cover on the 98-99 motor and do the wiring by looking at both the 95 and 98-99 wiring diagram.

anyone care to explain the throttle position sensor? I have a 93 900rr with a 99 engine in it. The 99 engine/carbs were california versions with the emissions system. I modified the engine and removed the PAIR system, but I didn't try very hard to get the 99 carbs to work. I threw my 93 carbs on and the engine has run well as far as i can tell. What am I losing by not using my 99 carbs (i have also modified the carbs and blocked off the emissions system, but i have not really tried to use them).

Ignore the wires for the Throttle Position Sensor (tie/cut them). Use your '95 carbs and CDI and it will run just fine. Assuming the wiring from the speed sensor to the speedo is the same for both years then just use the front sprocket mounted sensor and keep your '95 clocks. If not you will either need a speedo healer (as mentioned) to correct the timing of the pulses or you can wire up your old speedo into the new loom. The sprocket sensor only has three wires: +ve, -ve and the wire carrying the pulse. I wired this up on my '93. Two wires already existed and the third one I spliced into one of the lights (with the same fuse size). Really was that easy and it's worked brilliantly. Just check the wiring diagram to see which speedo wires are shared between the two years.
