Buying a 97 900rr
Hey whats going on guys. Im buying a bike in a box in a sense.. Im buying the bike from a friend that has done some mods nothing crazy though. The bike has been sitting for about 1yr - 2 yrs and I was wondering if someone can point me in the direction as to what I should to get the bike running good. I do work on cars but this is my first bike and i dont know where to start. Im guessing spark plugs, wires, changing the fluids, etc, but I'm not sure what type of good motor oil to use, nor what kind of wires to use, and whats up with these spark plug caps.. Do I need them ?

I would start by talking to your friend and having him write down everything that he has changed or done to the bike. I say this because if for instance he has been running synthetic oil, and you put on conventional oil, you will ruin the motor. Its silly stuff like that that will ruin your day. Maybe he put new plugs in recently. As for the rest of the stuff you should just contact a dealer and get a manual and start with that. The manual will outline how to do everything. If you have never worked on a motorcycle then you might want to throw your friend some chainge to hang out for an afternoon, maybe he can give you some pointers. At the very least assume the carbs need to be cleaned and go through every sin nut or bolt on the bike and make sure everything is tight. There is nothing worse than having some critical bolt work its way lose on a ride cause you or someone else forgot to tighten it. Good luck, and don't be afraid to ask questions cause thats a hell of a lot better than making a mistake.
