re starting
hi thanks guys for all the help. can i ask if i remove the + lead when bike is ticking over is it possible to get a shock from the cable?. i was going to send my alternator away to some place in england to get it checked. i was told of a place thats checks them and rewinds them if needed. but i will try the battery +test before hand. as for the question about does the battery go flat if bike sits for several days i couldnt tell you as my bike never gets a chance to sit that long as i use the bike every day love it to pieces.

Money buys luxury....if you can afford it..+1...but it's your bike and your time... I like to get my hand dirty depending on job. Wear electrical gloves.... If quit fix...why not. But if you are having 2nd thoughts...suggest you send parts out. Or take bike to local mechanic. I would get a battery tender and keep battery charge nightly..That'll keep bike running...

Like estate4life said, wear rubber gloves when you handle the battery cable. (But I'd be a little surprised if you got a shock even if you didn't have rubber gloves on.) Another test would be to put a multi-meter across the battery terminals and measure the voltage at idle, 3k, and 5k RPM. (someone else will have to chime in with the expected voltages)

sounds like the charging circuit for sure...use the manual (if you have one) to see if it's the stator or r/r that's bad... resistance and insulation breakdown test will work seeing as most people don't have a peak voltage adapter... and if that's for sure good then head to the regulator/rectifier... if the manual doesn't have it i will scan my instructions on how to test that crap (i've tested way too many of those at school)
