just quit on me, took off tested it works fine. put back on and nothing so i checked fuse and test lighted it(fine) cleaned up ground put back on. then testlighted every wire(fine)put testlight on ground and put it on thermostat on front of radiator with wire on it and fan kicked on slow but not like usuall. so do i need a new thermostat? the gagde on top is working fine it tels me when it is cold and getting way to hot. cant figure out please help.

Just wire it to a toggle switch and the battery. I never ride without my fan on.

 

I have a 96 900RR that the previous owner just bypassed the switch. The fan just quit one day. He wired it to the headlights I believe, it comes on with the key and stays on. No issues other than a loose wire that I have to fix. Fan shuts off with big bumps and I just taps the wiring and it comes back on.

 

I don't mean to bump a graveyard post, but my fan runs continously if the key is turned on and the ignition is on.. Is this a bad thing?

 

There's really nothing wrong with that other than wearing out the fan sooner. If I was to nit pick it I'd say that a running fan actually restricts air flow when the bike is at speed but I doubt it would hurt anything unless you were in extreme conditions.

 

Do you think it would drain the battery?

IMO, I never suggest to bypass anything....fan switch is there for its purpose. The bike's electrical is design the way it is...why bypass to save a $22 switch?

Now, I've replace my fan switch in less than 15min...at the same time you can flush the radi! Bike loves that...

Your thermostat has nothing to do with the fan, thermostat only control, telling valve when to release cooler coolant into the engine. The fan switch moniter temp inside the radi, so at a norm when you are riding, air flow keep radi cool...but at a stop light, coolant inside radi rises to a point, the switch sense this and tells the fan to go on...the radi cap sense pressure til certain psi, then opens and let hot coolant from the engine re-enter radi....

It's all meant to work together, bypass electrical may not seem severe but in the long term, who knows what will happen?

In your case, sound like your fan switch needs replacing...

 

Fan switch? I have a ground wire running from my fan to the frame, and it seems to be another one running thru the wire harness..
