‘03 Honda CBR900RR won’t move in neutral and stalls when put in gear
Hey everyone, i’m new here and I need some help. I recently got a 2003 Honda CBR900RR and it starts up and the engine runs fine, but every time I pull the clutch and drop it in first it stalls pretty hard. I’ve adjusted the clutch, and it is definitely not that. I know this isn’t the issue because the bike will also get “stuck” on something when i try to push it on the road in neutral. It will move a little, but then it feels like it’s getting caught on something. The feeling is very similar to when your are parking a car with an automatic transmission. Where you would have your foot on the brake, and put the shifter to park, then let off the brake. The car would like pearce forward a little but then stop because it’s in park. That’s the best way i can describe the feeling, if you know what im talking about. So i think it may be a transmission problem. but it’s weird because i was able to move the bike by pushing it a couple weeks ago. Any suggestions on what it could be would greatly help me. Also, i’m planning on selling it, that’s why i want to know what’s wrong. Thanks all.
The side stand has a safety switch that stalls the bike if put in gear while down. It has caught me a few times as well.
Now when trying to move (push) the bike in neutral, is this immediately after the bike stalls (safety shutdown) or independent of that issue?

thank you so much for the reply it makes a ton of sense. and it WILL move but every now and then it gets hung up on something like mentioned in the original post, and if you push hard enough it breaks free with a loud click. i thought maybe it was the chain but i can’t really figure out. the sound comes out of the area where the chain meets the motor. it also seems to do it more pushed backwards than forwards (or the opposite i can’t remember)
any suggestions on what that could be?
EDIT: forgot to mention that this happens no matter what, it won’t change after it stalled or whatever. it just happens when you push it no matter what even when the motor is on.

Think it’s time to expose the front sprocket. Would be nice to find something simply trapped in there or not nice to find your counter shaft bearing is shot.
How tight is your chain ? Maybe with the chain tight, you could have done some damage with your attempted gear selection.
Best of luck mate.
ps check your master link is secured correctly

Also ensure your rear axle is correctly aligned (equal spacing) in the guides for chain tension.
If the chain, alignment, and drive sprocket are good to go remove the chain from the drive sprocket and spin it by hand to see if you get the same hang up. If so the issue might be in the transmission.

I figured it out guys!!
Turns out i’m just an idiot, and have been trying to put it in gear with the side stand down. Lifted it up, and bam, it doesn’t stall. Just me being dumb! and as for the hard to push and move problem, turns out there was a small nut squished in between a link in the chain causing it to get hung up near the sprocket, just took it out and fixed it. The bike rides good now! Thanks everyone for the help, i hope maybe some day this thread can help someone else out.
