headers

Anyone know what makes the stock headers restrictive? There are 2 humps that look somewhat like catylitic converters. Does anyone know whats inside them? I may be getting some micron headers, just wondering why they are claimed to be so much better than stock, besides the fact thatthey are hydro-formed. Thanx:)

I don't know why the stock headers are so restrictive. But one advantage of aftermarket headers would be the weight savings.

The stock exhaust system has a Catalytic converters. that's what makes it so restrictive. it's like a super dense filter that exhaust gases must pass though in order to help meet EPA regulations. What they are made of, i don't know. But that's what they do.

Aftermarket headers are certainly less restrictive, and a bit less weight, but the OEM parts are pretty damn good to start with. IMHO, you get the best bang for the buck with a slip on. You get only a few more ponies with a full header over just a slip on, but geez it costs a whole lot more. For racers, sure you gotta have the full system. For the rest of us, tho, I think you'd go faster if you invested that money in track days, or a school like Jason Pridmore's STAR School.

I was actually thinking a guy could cut out the converters and weld in open pipe. Just a thought, heavy non-restrictive race headers for $3.00 lol.
