General shifting question
Hey all, I hope I'm posting this in the appropriate place.
I'm new to riding sportbikes and have a question. (I already know I shouldnt be on a 600RR, so no need to lecture
)
The manual says to shift at12, 19, 25, 31, and 37 mph. I know this is for casual riding and I understand how to shift if you want to get on it. It just seems that for even causual riding these points come way to fast. For example, on a 45mph road, it felt much better to be in 3rd or 4th approaching 45 mph. But then I end up just skipping from 3rd to 6th at 45 mph since I'm no longer accelerating. This just seems weird to me. Should I be shifting quicker, or just leaving it in 3rd or 4th at 45 mph? It sure doesnt feel natural to cruise at 5k rpm, but then again these bikes go much higher then that.
I appreciate your thoughts on this matter. I know I will understand moreas I gain experience, its just that I'm taking it real slow. I have 33 miles on the bike now and I have had it for almost 16 days! (I put 24 miles on it yesterday morning!) LOL.

I just shift at whatever is appropriate for how I am riding. I think everyone prefers different shifting points to suit them best. If you want my opinion, I usually like to keep it around 6-7K on the street. It isn't too loud, and if you need to give it some gas in a pinch its right there.
when i am crusing the streets i like to keep it around 5.5k that way the 2nd set of injectors dont kick in and itll give me a lil more mpg that way... but really, i mean shirfting, you can just get going to 45 in first than shift it 6 lol, i do that sometimes.
I usually keep around 6,000--if that means I spend my whole trip to work in 3rd gear, that's fine by me. Anything below 5,000 means you can't get out of the way if you need to--the bike likes to be wound up higher than that.
Any casual cruising I don't typically go over 7, or maybe 7.5k. But like bikerboy said, I prefer to keep the bike somewhat in the powerband so just in case I have to scoot I don't need to drop 3 gears to be able to.

Wow, 6 - 7 K? Interesting. I was sitting around 3. I will try that and see how it feels.
Anyone else? What RPMs do you like to cruise at?

usually 7k on the highway or interstate
shift where the manual tells you to if you're looking for 50mpg, lol. otherwise you can ride like you want to and still get 38 ish

at 3k arent you almost to the point of lugging the engine?
casual I ride around 5-6k. in traffic I keep it a little higher around 7K, if Im in the twisties, I keep in the double digits.
