No, the course is not required. But it´s a cheap, effective way to learn enough skill to justify purchasing a 600RR as a first bike...provided you are not a ham-fisted numbskull...which I would guess the 335i is an indication you are not.
Everyone has an opinion on which bike is better...the Honda really is a world-class performer, but all modern sport bikes are. Honestly, if you are field testing frame welds...chances are you´re in for a world of hurt, regardless of the machine.
Take the rider course. Get the Honda. Take the course again. Ride. Enjoy. Repeat.

The new rider courses have their own bikes for you to learn on. Helmets, too...it´s all covered in the course fee.
