Lol, had to laugh, sorry. They are the devices that you put your feet on. Left side has the shifting rig, and the right side has the rear brake setup. The advantage to getting aftermarket ones is that they are adjustable, and are up higher, so you can get lower in corners without scraping. They are not cheap though. Also, some of them have adjustable shift linkages (which you can shorten down) so that the bike shifts with almost no effort.

I will also add to B's post. Majority of them also don't fold up in the event of an accident providing more protection for the bike. Some also allow for GP Style shifting. (Upshift = pressing the shifter pegdown, Downshift = pulling shifter peg up) <- This is nice to have so your foot doesn't catch if you have to shift while leaning. Some brands include Vortex, Woodcrafts, Gilles, Satos along with many more
