What do you think they do? That would help us answer what you are thinking better...

Yea, they really help and should be the first modification you do on your bike...they're good for zero mph drops (like dropping the bike in your garage) and most low sides...they can save you a lot of money in the long run in case something dumb happens.

I prefer Euro Racing brand (Yoyodyne).

+1 on the brand

+2 on buying them (if your asking if they help, then you definately need to buy them)

To answer the first question, my assumption is that they help protect the fairings when it gets dropped. The big thing is that the local dealer says I have to cut a hole in my fairings. Is this right?

Well, they MIGHT help protect your fairings, but that's not what they are designed to protect, namely your frame. I've seen alot of bikes that have lowsided with frame sliders and have really ****ed up plastics. if the bike just get's blown over in the wind, it might help a little, but it's a gamble either way. Better than having nothing.

ah!

And yes, you will have to cut holes in your fairings to accomodate most frame sliders.
