600RR vs F4i head?
#11
Well I finally got my hands on a 600RR cylinder head (found a local guy who had a damaged one sitting in his garage so I was able to measure/compare). Turns out the heads physically "fit", but with 3 differences. If you note the picture attached, I marked the 3 difference:
1 & 2 - The F4/F4i has extra deck surface for elongated coolant passages. These are a real issue that prevents an "easy swap". A welder could weld some passes on the head to build up a longer deck surface and the head could be milled to ensure flatness. Then the coolant passages would be covered like an F4/F4i. This would be a "relatively easy" fix for a machine shop.
3 - The 600RR and F4/F4i alignment dowels that are in different spots. This could be solved easy enough by welding up the dowel holes and re-drilling to match the F4/F4i block (very easy for a machine shop).
Other than these issues, the 600RR heads fit the F4/F4i block. The head bolts down, the bores are in the same place and the same size. Heck, even the camshafts look like they might swap over. Sadly if Honda hadn't played with these 3 insignificant changes, a 600RR head would be a bolt-on deal. Oh well. Guess I go find an F4i head (all of a sudden there are loads on ebay for cheap) and move on.
