I'm trying to do the same thing. I've read something (maybe in your link) about the pieces under the rubber button that complete the circuit when you push it in have a tendency to fall away and settle to the bottom of the display unit.

I am having that problem now on my 04600RR. One of the plastic pieces fell off and settled to the bottom and I now have to figure out how to open the display and put it back together. Any ideas?

just take out the front fairing and unplug the display. unbolt it and then take the front off thats held on by like 8 phillip screwdrivers. the platsic things that the rubber buttons push to make contact fall off so i just super glued them back on. close it up and good to go.

is there any way to get at it without taking off the lower, mid, and upper cowl? Thats a pain in the *** and I don't wanna do that again just for this small fix. Already tried digging in there with some small tools. Toothpick worked well but I couldn't get the plastic piece to snap back into place.
