dont run a 170...

If you cant hit the turns at speeds you want while gangsta leaning your bike to scrape some knee with a 180 on, thats pretty weak... sorry no offense but a 180 is a perfect tire. no need to change to a 170 for street riding. I could shave the michelin man off of my pilot powers off in about 10 minutes of just street riding and those were 180's... i had about a 1/4 inch of chicken wings on 190's...

I say you get gangster, and keep that 180

I know you can do it,its a RR it comes stock for knee draggers

but since you have it, push down on the opposite side of the tire the part thats already on the bead so that it goes to the middle of the rim while prying the tire over the rim... that should do it... unless you have the wrong rims size lol...

IMO.... it's easier and safer to just have a shop mount and balance them. If your determined to do it yourself, use a ton of WD40 and you should be able to press it on. Start at one end and hold it in place with your knee and press the tire down away from you, or have someone of good size step on it to pop it in place. There is a cheap tool called a tire spoon that will hook on the inside of the rim and give you leverage, but it's usually not needed. My experience is with motorcross tires... street tires/rims should be balanced so I've always taken them to a shop.

Be smart about it. We all would like to save some cash by doing our own handywork. But you look like you really need to take the tire in and have it mounted. You could use WD-40 but I would use liquid silicone...comes in a big teal/green can...slippery as he11. If you do use it or any lube to get the tire on yourself....clean the tire graciously prior to riding. But on a manly note I haven't payed attention to what you ride (600, 929, 954 or 1000) but you should stay with the 180 (means you are on a 600 more likely). Going with a smaller 170 is not what you are looking for. Haven't you heard the "Wider is Better"? It's true. Nothing but 190 on my 929RR and just like OneWheelinRR said, about 1/4 chicken wings is all I have...actually, I think mine is smaller than that. In short, Wider is Better and safer for what you are trying to do.

Unless you have the right tools, its going to be a bitch to get the tire mounted yourself.

As far as the 170, don't listen to these guys. If you're after a quicker steering response, that is one way to get it. You're bike will be fine with a 170. Going to a 170 on your bike is no different than liter bike riders going to a 190 for quicker turning response....which many liter bike riders do.

If you want to stick with a 180, you can drop the forks a little or raise the rear.
