1600 Mile Tune-Up
Hey Guys! I could have swore I read this somewhere, but I cannot find it. When I bought my 03 in June, it had 430 miles on it. The previous owner had the 500 mile oil change done sometime last summer/fall. I am getting ready to turn 1700, and wondered if someone could help me out as far as what needs to be done.
I did a search on oil changes and it seems that the majority of people suggest have the oil changed every 3-4K miles. Does it matter what the time frame between those 3-4k miles are?
Thanks in Advance for the Help!

it wouldnt hurt to change it. I got my 03 with 1600 on it as well and i am about to change it becaues i have no idea when it was done last. I would say go ahead and change the oil and filter because even though its not that many miles, the oil has still been sitting there for a while.

just do the oil/filter change
good quality synth oil every 4K miles and you cant go wrong.
you cant change your oil too often,
i would change it now, the again at 4K to get it on schedule

to the OP, be sure that after you get this change done and over with to get your oil tested to determine YOUR OCI. I HIGHLY recommend Blackstone Labs to do your UOA. they will keep your UOAs for your CBR on file so that you can get a firm understanding of what's going on inside the engine, which means you can prevent a critical engine failure before it happens or document a recurring problem.

i wouldn't just go out there tossing numbers around if i were you. where did you come up with 4000 miles? What basis do you have to put him on a schedule?

ok then good quality synth every 19.7 miles
happy now?
since the scheduled maintenance is every 8000 miles i figured that the number 4000 would have been obvious but apparently not. also since simple searching the internet would show that oil analysis tests show that good synth like repsol will last 5K miles or more the 4000 mile interval keeps the bike on an oil change/full service interval. you dont techniclly have to change the oil but every 8K miles but like i said you cant change it too often
also recommended for oil testing is http://www.oaitesting.com/.
they are the ones that did the testing and provided the results saying that repsol lasts for 5K miles plus

baxsom,
i agree, you can't change it too often! which synthetic do you suggest?
knight slugger,
thanks for the suggestion. i definitely keep this in mind. what is an estimated cost to have this done?

Baxsom: What i meant is that universal numbers don't always apply to everyone. his OCI is going to be different than yours depending on his riding, his climate, and his bike's setup. you can't just throw a number out there expecting good things.
