Default 03 RR Compression Readings

Anyone done a test on the compression re the 600RR 2003. I did mine and have 135 pounds across the board give or take a pound. The bike runs great, but I checked it to be safe as it has 50,000 miles on it. I did a wet dry test and there is no change in the readings.

When I check my manual the readings from Honda are 175 pounds, so I am a bit confused. I actually called them to see if there was a typo in the manual - being the first year for the 600rr and all. They confirmed it should be 175.

I checked my compression gauge on another bike and it is reading correctly.

Anytime I have had a problem with valves or rings it has been evident in the compression being low on one or two cylinders, but to be down on all four and down the same amount doesn't make sense. I suppose its possible to have equal wear on valve guides or seats but it doesn't seem logical especially on a bike with multiple valves per cyclinder for both intake and exhaust.

Anyone with any insight on this - feedback would be appreciated.

Did you try putting a squirt of oil in each cylinder to see if the compression rises? Even if that makes a difference, I wouldn't do anything if it is running ok.

Yes, I did a wet compression test as well as a dry test. No noticeable difference in the readings. I think I am going to opt to purchase a leakdown tester...anyone have a recommendation on model and source of supply.

I guess if I would have read your whole post, I would have noticed that you stated wet and dry test. I am not sure I can help with a recommendation for a leak down tester. I usually buy tools from the trucks when I am at work and they get pricey. Did you try ebay? In the past, I have suggested putting a bit of Rislone down in each cylinder and letting the bike sit for a few days. It helps in the cases that the rings are stuck. Since your readings are all even, it is possible the rings are just worn.

Would you not think that the readings would increase when I did the wet test if it was worn rings?

I would have to agree that the compression readings would increase with the onset of weak rings.
