Default When removing gas tank

I am taking of my gas tank to get at my carbs. There is a switch and a gas line coming from it. Can i just turn the switch so gas won't come out or do I need to get a plug to keep the gas from pouring out. I was smart enuf to fill my gas just before i decided to do this. I want to get at the carbs and clean them. Someone told me to take out the needles and soak them in gas. My bike seems like it is sputtering and not getting enuf gas. There is a popping noise coming from the exhaust and i don't have the power i used to. My bike has sat around too much so I'm thinking they are right to recommend that since it ran fine before. I prob need to take of carbs to get at needles i bet. I have worked on cars just not bikes.

Just turn the gas off. I had a full tank of gas when I did mine to do the air cleaner and the spark plugs. Heavy sob too when full. Have fun with that, and good luck.

thanx, I did it and got the tank off. U mentioned changing the spark plugs with tank off. Is it easier that way? Seems like the angle of the head makes it seem like it wont help with tank off.

Taking the tank off makes no difference to getting at the spark plugs. Changing the plugs is actually easier than you think if you have the owners manual it explains what you have to do

I changed one plug, but still seems hard to change the middle ones. Is it easier of you have the factory tool or is it just as easy with a car set?

I went ahead and took the tank and air box off. I have little hands so it seemed easier for me to get all that stuff out of the way. Same thing when I helped the boyfriend change his on his f4i back in the day. The factory tools that come with it is actually all you need.

you will have trouble using a car set. The factory tool does a great job. I pulled the tank and airbox and it wasnt too bad. A little tight at points, but OK overall.

1badf4 pretty much sumed it up. Tight but not bad. Get the tank out of the way and the air box and you'll be home free.

Yeah, I managed to change all the plugs. It runs better, but I still have this sputtering between 4-5k rpms. I read on a post it occurs when the exhaust is modified and the carbs are not. I've heard it is necessary to have a jet kit installed. I thot maybe my carbs were dirty, but I don't think that is it. So maybe i need to have that done. How much is it for a shop to put in a jet kit. But it does seem like I am missing alot from 4-5k. I hear popping from the exhaust. Sound like "poo" "poo" "poo", can u hear it, hehe. I wonder if the timing could be off, but why would timing be off? I wonder how to check that or to adjust it myself. I will probably have to do a search. I wish there was someone that lived out here in Pasadena that could check out my bike. I am always scared of going to a mechanic cuz they can tell me anything.

Typically I have not seen them need to be jetted unless you mess with the air filter. What kind of slipon do you have and does it have a K&N or BMC air filter.

If it does need to be jetted, I have no idea where to take it in your area. It will need to be jetted and dyno'ed to make sure it is running well. I jetted my bike and it runs well, but it takes a lot of time and patience.
