well first, you have to start the bike either in neutral with the kickstand down, or in gear, with the kickstand up and clutch in.

Second, if it was making a popping sound while reving, and maybe that was possibly some backfiring, there are a number of things that could be wrong. Like the timing could be off, maybe the carbs, or at least one of the four carbs are stuck open, causing it to unload a ton of gas into the one cylinder.

did i do anything to cause this? this was the first time i rode it..i just thouhgt i ran out of gas...i started up again to see if i could make it to the gas station..it started but then something poped and i didnt wanna risk no damage to the bike, so i put it on neutral and walked it about three blocks to the gas station...i only put about 5 dollars of gas and it was pretty full...i know cause i kept checking hopin not to over fill...soon after that i try to stated no luck..my concern was that maybe the reason for this was because i rode it on first gear....what you think?

I don't think that riding it in 1st gear would have caused any serious damage because the bikes are made to sustain all the way to the redline. If you weren't doing over 70 mph then i doubt that riding in first gear has anything to do with it.

You're probably gonna need to provide a little more info to get a diagnosis. Was the bike tuned when you bought it? Did you inspect the bike before you got on it, Chain, sprockets, brakes, lights, loose cables, etc? Will the bike start back up?

u sure the fuel line wasnt set to the off position, it should be right next to your knee. and its a silver ****, kind of looks like the back side of key sticking out. there are 3 positions off, Reserve tank, and on for ur regular tank. if the bike had been sitting a while previous owner may have set it to off.
