Default Rebuilding engine with aftermarket parts

Hello everyone,

I just bought a 1999 CBR600F4 which i'm going to use as my first bike but the engine came seized. apparently the bike sat in a heated garage and gas made its way down into the crank case, turning into a varnish causing everything to stick together. im trying to source new crank/rod bearings and piston rings, but i'm only able to find aftermarket. does anyone have recommendations on what i should use if i cant find OEM parts?

Hi, and welcome to the forum. Having it turn to varnish doesn't mean it's damaged. Just means that it's stuck. As long as the cylinder walls are not badly pitted, it can be cleaned up with a little honing and a good cleaning. If you have unlimited finances, then go for it. But, I would not purchase any parts until you've taken it apart and know exactly what condition it's in.

Thanks for the rapid response. the walls look brand new after i wiped them with some acetone, in fact they still have cross-hatch in them from the factory honing process. i recognize that the varnish doesnt mean things are damaged, but the bearings dont look very good from staining and i have 1 ring on cylinder 4 that was stuck and i bent it while trying to remove it.

Stains don't hurt, so long as they're not damaged and still have proper clearances. New OEM rings for 1 piston is the way I'd go.

i thought about just putting it together to see what i get for clearances. im hoping it will be ok. i was afraid you were going to say that about the rings though. they are hard to come by lately.

Essentially no one is going to stock this type of part. It's going to have to come from Honda's distribution warehouses in the US.

You might try PartZilla too. It looks like they query Honda's inventory so might have a better idea on availability.

I ended up going with Ron Ayers. they had the cheapest prices and seemingly the fastest ship times. I placed the order last night and it says everything should be here next week. thank you for the recommendation. I feel much better about buying OEM Honda parts. I also ended up ordering bearings anyway too because I already have the engine apart and I don't like the way mine look. I would hate to regret my decision of reusing the old ones.

Which bearing color did you order?
