i want to do an oil change this week i dont really want to take off my fairing if i dont have to.. i had to do it on my old ninja 500.. the lower fairing was easy to get off so yeah lol...


what kind of wrench do i need for the drain plug 17mm?

4 quarts of oil? 10W40 ill go synthetic since it was already in there..

and the oil filter.. easy to get on and off with the fairing still on?

and any other tips you would like to say please let me know

oh and does honda really recommend an oil change every 8k?? its my daily rider so.. i figured 3-4k but the guy i got the bike from changed it last year and did not ride it alot but i do want to put fresh stuff in her.. and some seafoam just incase..

>Oil req = 3.5 US qt (per factory service manual) - use the sight glass mark.
>Take R side fairing off for easier access. Isn't difficult...so why not?...only takes a couple of min.
>Recommend changing your oil every 3K or so.

I use factory Honda filters. The quality is excellent.
I use Honda GN4 10w40 or Rotella T 15w40 (avail at Walmart).

I'll give you my oil change procedure...

*Put bike on stands (both - so that its level).
*Remove R side lower fairing .
*Place flat oil container under bike.
*Place piece of aluminum foil under oil filter to catch & direct any flow of oil to pan.
*Remove drain plug & let oil drain.
*Remove oil filter & continue to let bike drain.
*Install new oil filter after lubricating rubber ring on new filter w/ a few drops of oil.
*Remove alum foil.
*Secure drain plug back into bike.
*Fill bike w/ oil to level line on sight glass.
*Run bike for a couple of minutes & re-examine oil level.
*Add oil as necessary to proper level.
*Secure R side fairing.
*Bike down from stands.

If I can't get my oil filter off by hand, I use an oil filter wrench like this...





The process is easy. Just take your time & do it right. :-)

 

If its your daily driver I would not wait 8K to change the oil. The filter may last but I wouldn't chance the oil. Put 3-3.5 quarts in and fire it up then check the level through the site glass and see where you are. As far as removing the fairings I'm not sure the last oil change I did was accompanied with a clutch replacement. Not sure about the drain plug either.

 

T6 Is a better choice in my opinion (5w-40). +1 for oem oil filters!!

i picked up a K&N since i used them in my old 500 i like them

now can someone tell me the difference if the manual says use 10w40 why you use 5w or 15w? still learning

i understand it flows thinner when cold and thicker when hot so why even use 5w if its so thin when its cold.. ?? this is such a confusing subject for me lol

More good reasons to remove the R side lower fairing panel are to; visually inspect, fill radiator reservoir, check hoses, etc. I make it part of my regular routine when doing my oil & filter.

no disrespect to any body elses way but, to get mine done in ten min or less i dont remove anything. i just stuff a rag under the filter to catch the little bit of oil when i remove and install a new one. take the rag out and use some brake cleaner to remove any little bit of oil on header. when ya get good at it there will be hardly none to get off. by that time all the oil has drained and put plug in, refill with fresh oil. all good, might be a bit messier than the other way but, takes a little less time.

after turning wrenches on cars for a while, brake cleaner is my friend when doing oil changes, lol.
