Default Newbie - need help with 1999 CBR 600 F4

Hi all,
I'm a new 1999 CBR 600 F4 owner...
Just about to get the bike on this weekend.
I don't know if I'm lucky enough to get this bike for less than a grant, but...

The bike is in not-running condition.....
Been stored for 2 years said the owner after he falls.

He flushed the old gas, refilled with a new gas.
He replaced the battery,
started the engine for about 2 mins and it turns off,
and he couldn't start the engine.

What could be the possibilities ?
What else needs to be checked ?

Thank you for your response.

After standing for 2 years - I would be doing a carb strip and clean making sure the main things like jets and float needles are all clean and clear.

definitely replace the oil, there might be something wrong with the charging system or the ecm.

Hi All,

Thanks for your reply.
I had just been able to find this thread

I checked, the oil is there.
He said he replaced the oil last year.
Also he said that he's been keeping it for 2 years.
That means the oil is new.
I checked the oil level on the viewing glass on the side, it's clear yellow, means it's new, just a little over the max limit.

Today, I tried to fill up the gas tank, use a jumper cable since the battery is no longer hold charge.
It won't start, the engine won't turned on.

I haven't check the spark on the spark plug.

It might be electrical problem.
btw how do i know if it's the ecm ?

It wont turn over? Or it wont turn on i.e. the lights do not come and neither does the dash? You will most likely need to replace the battery if it cannot hold a charge. Take it to an auto parts store, they will normally test it for free. And it is rarely the ecm; Check the fuses if the bike wont turn on; make sure the bike has fresh coolant and brake fluid as well as the oil and filter. Let us know about if its starting, and if it makes you feel better I just pulled my bike back from the dead of not being cared for for a year and she is purring pretty; so you can do it!

CJardine,

Lights are on, the battery is about couple months old said the owner, but since the engine won't turn on, the battery doesn't have enough power for starting, only for the dashboard lights

I can hear a popping sound when I turn the key on, it seems that the fuel pump is working fine.

I used a jumper cable to help the weak battery, trying to start without any success.

Today, I tried to take the spark plug out to check whether there's spark on the spark plug or not. Took out the fairing, gas tank, air filter....

uh oh i didn't expect that it's much more complex that i thought before. I don't have the proper tool !
a 5/8" socket and 6" extension is not enough. Too cramped.
a regular spark plug tool kit wouldn't work either.

Can someone suggest, which spark plug tool I should buy ?
Would a standard CBR tool kit suffice to do the job ?

I would start with getting the battery tested /charged. When you push the starter button does the headlight turn off and the engine try to start or absolutely nothing? For pulling spark plugs I use 2 2" extensions, you might find it easier to detach the radiator from the frame (not the hoses) and not have to remove so much of the bike just to get to the plugs. When you do get them out can you post up a pic so we can see whats going on in the engine? Maybe even record a video of the bike while you're trying to start it.

See if you are getting fire to the plugs there is a diode in the starting system that keeps the bike from fireing if its brunt out
