Default New F4

Hi guys I just bought my bike its a 99 F4. This is my first bike so im new to everything. I keep reading stuff about the sprockets and going -1 and +2. Ive read that the stock sprockets are for my bike are 16 front and 45 rear. My bike has 15 front and 50 on the rear. What exactly is this going to do because this is way more than most people recommend doing.

Its going to give you more accelaration and less top end. With what you have the front wheel will come off the ground very easy. I have a 520 conversion on my 2000 F4 -1 +2 rear and love it.

Was the bike used as a stunt bike before you got it. I recommend going down 3 in the back. Just my opinion..

I bought the bike from an older lady about 45 50 I couldnt believe she even rode it. She was kind of big to so I doubt she stunted it.

That is a big jump on the back. For whatever reason when the person changed out the rear they wanted a crap load of low end power. If you are using the bike for a everyday riding with some aggressive street riding here and there I would get a smaller rear. The -1 +2 with a 520 chain seems to be the most popular set up on the f4.

What's the best place and price to get the -1 +2 and 520 chain setup online?

Thanks,
Jason

Check ebay, obviously, there are always accelleration kits on there.
ALso check www.sumofallparts.com, that's where I got mine thru ebay.
Forget what i paid for it though.
You might want to call them to size it for you ,cause I had to take out some links to make it fit.

For your first bike going back to stock sprockets is probably a good idea - it will still have more than enough punch. Going -1, +5 is pretty crazy. I run -1,+2 (track setup) and I find it is quick enough in low gears that I couldn't really rationalize going shorter.

For highway use -1,+2 is a bit buzzy, -1,+5 would be really really buzzy. Also note that unless the previous owner installed a speedohealer (or some such corrective device) the speedometer will be wildly inaccurate (reading way higher than you are going) and you will also put many miles onto the odometer you haven't ridden (hurts resale).

I'd suggest stock sprockets for you, or at the absolute most -1,+2.

Cheers,
woot.

I think I will leave the front alone and go back to the stock rear. How can I tell if one of these speedohealers is on my bike.

i got 15 front 49 rear! 3rd gear highchairs are the **** on the highway! passing ppl at 65-70 sitting high up on the tank! but yea, its a bit loud but hey, its a rocket... its supposed to be! i have my ipod in most of the time so its no big deal...

unless you wanna do 4th gear clutch up wheelies, i would just go back to stock for you in the back... down 1 will still bring the bike up in 3rd!!!

be careful and ride safe

The easiest test? Get a buddy to put his car/bike at a steady 65mph, pull in behind him and look at your speedometer. If it is within a few mph then it's just a bit out (standard factory ammounts)

Mine with a -1,+2 setup is about 14% error - or more about 9mph high at 65mph. I don't have a speedohealer yet.

The other test is to take the bike to exactly 6000 rpm in 2nd gear and read the speedometer. Post up what you have and others will tell you what they have. You can also check some of the charts I have in my photo gallery for different sprocket - speed vs rpms.
