Having the tach drop to zero and return is a symptom that I have seen on my '99 VFR every time that the regulator/rectifier is failing. This is a very common problem for the VFR and, from what I read here, also with some CBRs.

sounds to me your regulator is going dude. i had an old fzr 600 that when you rode it hard the regulator would just over heat and kill the bike, then after it died it would just click click click click click click ...after a while you could jump it off and make it home if you were lucky..i just didnt want to mess with it anymore so i sold it lol oh also every time it did it it would kill the battery..stale. hope this helps brother.
